Description
The Summer School in Data Literacy is a module of Certificate in Data Literacy, which aims to provide participants with the skills necessary to transform data into knowledge. Participants of the Summer School in Data Literacy will be put into groups of 3 to 5 persons made up of participants from various ENHANCE universities. Participants will be given an open project challenge in Data Literacy scope that will be reviewed by academic teachers from Warsaw University of Technology, Universitat Politècnica de València - UPV (Spain), Politecnico di Milano - Polimi (Italy).
Expected learning outcomes
Students will gain the skills and knowledge related to: - Python programming focused on data analysis, transformation, manipulation, visualisation - Using tools and platforms like: Codium and StackOverflow - Machine learning algorithms (e.g. decision tree, linear regression, naive Bayes), training, testing, validating, quality control - Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks - Image data processing - Using Double Diamond methodology, teamworking
Prequisites
- Completed at least the first year of bachelor studies
- Basic Mathematics such as: function, matrices, basic graph theory e.g. definition of tress
- Statistics and Probability
- Programming: nice to have but not necessarily
- Well-developed social competences
Learning opportunity structure
The Summer School consists of four blocks (three online and one place-based in Warsaw). Participation in the School requires a prior preparation, including reading the materials provided by the Tutors and preparing a self-presentation (in accordance with the instructions provided). After the 4 weeks period Summer School ends, students will have to prepare projcts as a team work result.
Block 1 (online) The online meetings will be devoted to getting to know each other by students and tutors (workshop, self-presentations). Students will be introduced to the basic knowledge of Python, data analysis and manipulation libraries, data visualization, stackoverflow, codium.
Block 2 (online) In this part, students will be introduced to the machine learning concept (training, testing, validating, quality control, decision tree, linear regression, naive Bayes), tabular data, Nerual Networks, Convolutional
Block 3 (place-based, in Warsaw) During their stay in Warsaw, students will work in international teams on the project preparation using data literacy tools under space research topic. Work in teams will be supervised and supported by tutors. Each team will be assigned tutors. Additionally, mini-lectures introducing students to the techniques of solving complex project problems will be organized.
Block 4 (online) In this part, students will finish the design task and prepare their final version of a project. The tutors will support the teams in the process of preparing the final version of the project result.
Quality assurance
The two-level mutual trust-based quality assurance scheme has been adopted:
- at the university level: Warsaw University of Technology has applied its internal quality assurance procedures and structures to the proposal of Data Literacy (Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme) it submitted to ENHANCE and to its implementation - the related learning activities,
- at the Alliance level: the body composed of Education Officers has made decisions regarding the inclusion of Data Literacy (Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme) proposed by Warsaw University of Technology to the Innovative Learning Campus part of the joint ENHANCE educational offer, based on the compliance with the formal requirements and ENHANCE goals.
Schedule Information
Block 1 (online): 08.06 - 12.06.2026
Block 2 (online): 15.06 - 19.06.2026
Block 3 (place-based, in Warsaw): 22.06 - 26.06.2026
Block 4 (online): 29.06 - 03.07. 2026
Learning Assessment
- group and public presentations; - discussions; - engagement and project responsibility; - individual (partial) project tasks.
How to enroll
Registration to this ILO will be provided through MsForms questionaire that will be provided closer to the application starting date.
Students will be selected to participate in the summer school based on their answers in the application questionnaire. Particular attention will be paid to previous experience related to the subject area of the school and the student's specialisation during their studies.
Location
The on-site phase of the Summer school will take place in Warsaw.
The online part of the Summer school will be conducted via MsTeams.
Additional Notes
This summer school is financed through NAWA ENHANCER funds. Each enrolled participant will have accommodation, travel and living costs reimbursed. The subsidy amount depends on the location of the student's home university.
