Description
This course provides an extensive overview of research data management (RDM), its principles as well as its practical implications and useful tools for early career scientists. The Summer School builds on the internationally established “FAIR Data” principles.
RDM is vital to researchers for ensuring the proper organisation of research data along the entire lifecycle from creation to preservation including their sharing as FAIR data. Nowadays, research institutions as well as many funding agencies (e.g. Horizon Europe, Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)) expect good RDM practice throughout the entire project period and a data management plan. The Summer School supports researchers in meeting such requirements of universities and funders. It is held entirely in English.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the summer school, participants are able to:
· explain the basic concepts and components of research data management (RDM) along the research data life cycle in a national and international context,
· fulfil current requirements regarding RDM and Data Management Plans (DMPs) of universities and research funders (e.g. Rules on Open Research Data in Horizon Europe) in their own research,
· understand the basics of a DMP and develop DMPs compliant with university and funder requirements,
· survey the challenges of active RDM and properly annotate metadata, store and back up research data with appropriate tools for future reuse,
· critically evaluate and use tools and repositories for data management and data sharing, based on best practice examples from ETH Zurich,
· understand the challenges of long-term preservation and derive measures to prepare data accordingly.
Prequisites
Early-career scientists from all research disciplines are welcome. There are no specific prerequisites.
Quality assurance
The two-level mutual trust-based quality assurance scheme has been adopted:
- at the university level: ETH Zurich has applied its internal quality assurance procedures and structures to the proposal of ETH Research Data Management Summer School it submitted to ENHANCE and to its implementation - the related learning activities,
- at the Alliance level: the body composed of Education Officers has made decisions regarding the inclusion of ETH Research Data Management Summer School proposed by ETH Zurich to the Innovative Learning Campus part of the joint ENHANCE educational offer, based on the compliance with the formal requirements and ENHANCE goals.
